“My wife, Jenny, speaks about her encounters with the lover of her soul. I have witnessed her transformation because of these encounters. Being able to speak so frankly about her life is a living demonstration of one who has been so wonderfully set free from shame.

Excerpts from Chapter 18 –Loved Into Life

All of us, at times, have felt alone and without help in an overwhelmingly difficult situation. If we cannot run from or resist this, our protective responses are to suppress or push it out of our current realities. To prevent the “whole self” from becoming flooded, our minds actively push away and store that memory in the subconscious until it is resolved.

Susan refers to these stored memories as “parts of our hearts.” They are areas of the subconscious that are effectively held in the experience as if it is still happening. When present-day situations arise with some similarity to the original experience, it may trigger these parts to come forward. We feel the intensity of the original event and react as if at the age it took place.

Even what we may think of as relatively minor events can overwhelm a child who feels alone. So, we all have parts that hold onto beliefs based on experiences rather than the truth of who we are in Christ. For me, because the trauma was very severe and ongoing, many of these parts became distinctly defined.

We are united with Jesus. Any time we believe, feel, or act in a way that is not like Jesus, it reveals a part of the heart believing an alternative reality based on experience, not truth. We can therefore differentiate between our true self and what Susan describes as a message from a messenger (part). The message does not define who we are. It shows what happened to us so we can acknowledge it, but we do not need to explore it further. It provides an opportunity for greater wholeness! Transformation is not through a method but comes by restoring the relationship of this messenger with our adult self and Jesus, bringing a new experience to replace the old one. We then invite the part to integrate, since we are the same person.

In my sessions with Susan, I, my true adult self secure with Jesus, intentionally connected with parts of my heart by seeing or sensing them internally and engaging them relationally. When they felt my love for them and my present reality, they discovered they were no longer alone and that the trauma they had been reliving was no longer happening. As I invited these parts to meet Jesus and experience His love, healing was profound. Events that had been overwhelming became irrelevant. Anger and other emotions simply dissolved as Jesus absorbed them, and the pain vanished. Exhausted parts and those tired of holding secrets came to rest. Often my body shook as it released trauma.

Jesus had a heavenly celebratory party prepared for returning parts and a beautiful garden for them to play in and explore. To some, He gave heavenly horses, and to others, chariots to ride in. Many received beautiful clothes and crowns to wear. None of this, though, was as wonderful as just being with Jesus. To those who felt worthless, He revealed their value and significance.

There was no need to revisit the trauma, and as I invited parts to come home because we are one person, often hundreds or even thousands integrated at once without me ever needing to know their story. Revisiting every traumatic experience would take longer than a lifetime! I was experiencing the finished work of the cross, bringing lasting miraculous transformation and glorifying Jesus.

Parts of me were returning home, but in this prophetic vision, God was showing me something greater. He is uniting everyone from every people group, nation, and tribe. Just as all parts of me are one, humanity is one in God’s sight.
