Excerpts from Chapter 5 –Your Power is in Your Surrender
The Lord won’t stop pursuing you until you surrender every part of your heart because He knows surrender is your key to living a powerful life.
I met many wonderful people, but few, if any, sought to do life together. I expended great effort but still haven’t found a place of belonging. I heard about a church plant called Anthem of Hope starting in the area. The church’s pastors were Daniel and Jackie Groves, and his name was familiar to me because he had led worship for the youth camp I grew up attending states away. I didn’t know this then, but Anthem of Hope would be a place God would use to mature me in my relationship with Him. When I came to the Salvation Army building where their services were held, the beautiful sound of worship overwhelmed my senses.
The presence of the Lord was palpable in this place. As I was worshiping, the Lord asked me a surprising question: “Will you trust Me?” God’s questions often penetrated my heart, revealing my unknown secret thoughts before I could fully process my response. On this day, my answer brought to light that I wasn’t trusting God. When we choose to trust in ourselves rather than God, we make self-reliance and self-su#ciency idols. Our lives convey a message that we don’t need God. Even if this is the path we choose, the Lord will never stop loving us, but our idols limit the freedom we can experience in Him and hinder the depth of our relationships.
Trust is first a choice, a decision of our will, before it ever takes the form of faith in action. Just as we trust the Lord for salvation, He wants us to trust Him completely with our hearts and lives. When we choose not to trust Him, we limit His capacity to work. Trust encompasses love, respect, and friendship. It is impossible for Him to go to the depths of our hearts and for us to get to know Him intimately without trust.
All of these left me feeling full for a moment but more empty in the end. I can only equate this emptiness to my soul longing for something I could never find outside of His presence. My soul longed to connect with God more deeply, but my trust in myself prevented me from fully accessing this longing in my spirit. He had taken me as far as He could because I was withholding part of my heart from Him. He wanted all of me, and I heard Him whisper, “The power is in your surrender. The day I realized the truth about surrender was a day of recommitment for me, a day that comes back to my remembrance every time I have the option of trusting in myself or choosing Him.
God wants our confidence to be in Him. He longs to show up for us in the ways our hearts and souls desire and need. As we surrender, we sometimes think we have arrived, only to realize there is always more. We will face challenges as we enjoy getting to know more about who God is and deepening our trust in Him. A life surrendered is not a destination but a daily decision of the heart and mind. We must let go of our “arrival” mentality to step into the grace of daily following Him and deepening our trust in Him.
