April Farris has been a prophetic business consultant since 2008. Prior to going into the marketplace, she and her husband, Michael Farris, formed Living Stones Communities where they are apostolic co-leaders. They serve others through their equipping, prayer, house/micro church, and apostolic networks in Cleveland, Ohio. Excerpts from Chapter 6 –Spiritual Gifts Can Flow in the Marketplace
I asked my dear friend Cathy, who has been retired from her business for the last three years, if I could share the story of her marketplace journey with you. The challenges she faced as a female business pioneer have inspired me. She has made the way for the rest of us.
God began ministering through her daily in her business in unique ways. At that time, the idea of her ministering in the marketplace seemed to challenge her church leaders’ thinking because she was a woman who operated in the business world. The pastors and leaders of her church were surprised to meet a woman who studied her Bible, prayed, and received words of knowledge, wisdom, and discernment for people in the marketplace.
She has shared the gospel, prayed, taught, and given prophetic words to more people outside the church walls through her business than she ever was allowed to do inside the church walls.
Some churches teach that spiritual gifts are no longer in action as they were in the New Testament when Jesus and the disciples operated in them. This teaching hinders God from being able to minister through them to others. The Word of God is only limited by our level of faith. Signs and wonders can still happen today if we give Him permission to work through us. The blind are hearing, and the deaf are seeing. I firmly believe when Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father” (John 14:12 ESV). If you believe in Him, then you are one of the whoevers He is talking to. This verse means you can do greater works than He did. This promise was not intended for just His disciples.
If Jesus only intended the spiritual gifts for His disciples, then these gifts would have stopped with them, and there would be no power of the Holy Spirit in operation today. If the spiritual gifts were not to be continued beyond Jesus’s disciples, then Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, wouldn’t have preached on the spiritual gifts to three different cities to help them properly and wisely operate in the church.
Holy Spirit is the giver of the gifts. When Jesus ascended, He left us His Spirit not just for the fruit of the Spirit to shape our character but also for the gifts of the Spirit to multiply His work. Paul spoke of the variety of gifts given and how they manifest for the good of all and are divided among us as He desires. The key words in the above passage are He empowers them all in everyone. These gifts are available to everyone who confesses Jesus Christ as Lord.
Paul was showing the Corinthians that God gives these gifts for all to have access to. He lists them: wisdom, knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miracles, prophecy, ability to discern or distinguish between spirits, tongues, and the interpretation of tongues. Looking at the context of this teaching, he spoke to those who were a city of new believers in Christ.
These gifts are often known as grace gifts. The Greek word for “grace” is charis. One of its meanings is “to act the divine influence upon the heart and its reflection in the life.” These gifts are reflective of the grace we receive from Christ. They show the heart of God through us!
