Excerpts from Chapter 13 -Running with Passion and Determination
On a crisp frosty evening in the spring of 1912 the lives of 2,224 people were suddenly confronted with their mortality and the fragility of life. That night the Titanic, the largest ocean liner in service at that time, brushed up against an iceberg. The devastating blow opened six of sixteen compartments to the ocean, and forty-five minutes later, in the early morning of April 15, more than fifteen hundred people perished in the icy waters of the Atlantic. The behemoth vessel, a modern marvel of its time, was thought to be unsinkable.
I believe the hour we are living in can in some ways be compared to those several hours between the iceberg and submersion. When Christ died and rose again, the battle was won. It was the death blow to the kingdom of darkness, but we now live in the tension of waiting for His return and the transition into the next age.
As we sense the lowering of the ship, as it were, will we run for a lifeboat, ready to beg, borrow, and steal to protect our lives? Or, like those heroic musicians, will we simply continue on, being salt and light?
In the shaking, things come into focus. We find ourselves either loving and fighting for our life, or having already laid our life down in Christ. This is the place where our passion and determination to love Him is tested: in the midst of trials.
In this last Part of the book we are looking at the bigger picture of life as a marathon. Once we know and believe we are image bearers, and we have said yes to the healing process of becoming His Beloved, then we find ourselves with another challenge—keeping the fire of mature love lit, as we finish well.
Just like in a marriage, after you are several years in, the challenges that affect your relationship are different than those you faced when you were dating or engaged. The focus changes as your love matures. You may not get butterflies every time your spouse of twenty years reaches for your hand, but there is a strength and beauty that is forged through a life that is well-lived together. When we have been walking with the Lord for decades, we have likely moved into a stage of love that requires intentionality and diligence to maintain the fires of love that once came so naturally.
Once we have settled our identity in Christ and done our due diligence to remove the foxes from our vineyard, how do we keep our hearts alive in love while we wait for His return? How do we avoid the pitfalls of auto-pilot Christianity, burn-out, or the “older brother” mentality seen in Luke 15?
Thankfully, the scriptures have much to say on this topic. Like the eight musicians who played on the Titanic, we have been given the opportunity to shine bright as the dark gets darker. In order to do that, we must have oil in our lamps, and we must fight to stay awake, connected, and hungry.

“I have not only had the privilege of reading about the revelation and truths that Genavieve has poured into these pages, but I have had the beautiful experience of learning first hand from her about creativity and how we can partner with God as co-creators. Her kindness, compassion, and joy are central to who she is, and she creates an atmosphere of freedom as she leads creatives into a deeper understanding of their identity.
