Excerpts from Chapter 7 –Finding Solace in the Embrace of My Heavenly Father

As I continued to read the Bible and meet the Lord in the garden, the Holy Spirit revealed God in all His glory, majesty, and love. He was all I ever wanted in a Father—attentive, loving, caring, present, a Provider, Protec‐ tor, Teacher, and much more. He revealed Himself to me in ways that began fulfilling my desire to be loved by my natural father.

Abba Father lavished love on me that I had thirsted and longed for all my life. I began to bloom and blossom under His love and tender care. I began to understand that love is not finite— it is infinite. The more love you give away, the more love you receive.

Even in chastising me, He taught me that it is correction, not punishment. I did not have to fear punishment from Him in any way because Jesus took it all on the cross. All God wanted from me was love and obedience. I did not have to work to be loved because He loved me before I was born. I did not have to be someone I was not to please Him. He knew precisely who He created me to be. I learned I was His daughter, in whom He saw beauty and grace. He revealed the deep reservoir in my heart that He desired to fill with His divine love.

The Holy Spirit began revealing an area in my heart that needed attention. What I read in the Bible about God did not match my view of Him. On a level deeply embedded in my unconscious mind, I applied how I perceived my natural father to be to my Heavenly Father. My natural father was silent, uncommunicative, and aloof. My Heavenly Father desired to be with me, talk with me, show me things, and teach me—He wanted to spend time with me. Yet, because of how I viewed my natural father, I viewed God as hard to please, distant, and uninvolved.

My dad was a quiet, hard-working man. He was an engineer in the Philippines. I had good memories of my dad from my childhood. He would chop branches from mango and lychee trees from the neighbor’s yard so we could eat it. There was nothing like peeling a mango on a hot summer day and the mango juice dripping down our arms as we bit into its sweet and juicy flesh.

Things changed after my mom and dad divorced when I was in the sixth grade. I stayed with Dad to help care for my little brother, but my heart wanted to live with Mom. Holidays were difficult at first, but as I got older, I learned how to decorate the Christmas tree. Dad spent the holidays with his family, and I went to Mom’s. On the weekends, I would bounce between their houses. After a few years, Mom remarried, and her new husband did not want me around. I felt like an orphan with nowhere to go and no family to love me.

It was late 2004 when my younger brother told me that Dad was coughing up blood. Dad stubbornly refused to go to the doctor. I adamantly made him go, and the doctor performed tests. The three of us were sitting in the doctor’s office when Dad was diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell carcinoma of the lungs. The doctor shared with me the treatment plan with chemo‐ therapy to lengthen Dad’s life span by six months to one year. We believed God would heal Dad from cancer, and he continued to work. Faith and hope held me together during this time. Since I was self-employed and could rearrange my work schedule, I took Dad to chemotherapy and doctor appointments.

Dad came to church on Sundays and was encouraged to read the Apostle’s Creed aloud daily and his Bible. After his chemo‐ therapy appointments on Thursdays, we went to his favorite restaurant, where he would order the New York Strip. Other times, Dad wanted to eat saimin (Japanese noodles in broth with vegetables). I was amazed that he had an appetite to eat and no significant side effects from chemotherapy. My three children were able to finally connect with him in ways that they could not prior. It warmed my heart to see Dad interacting with them.

I was blessed to spend time with Dad—praying, reading the Bible, and talking to him about Jesus and Heaven. We shared funny moments; one of them was him watching me through the living room window.

The pastors agreed to have church service in his home. We worshiped and praised God, and he listened to God’s Word. We prayed for God’s peace and love to fill him and commanded fear to leave. The following morning, I received a phone call from my oldest sister, informing me, “Dad quietly passed away a few minutes ago.”

It took a long time to process the passing of my father. I was angry because God did not heal him; instead, He took him away. Dad and I were beginning to bond and appreciate one another, but most of all, we were able to love one another.

Slowly, as the Holy Spirit worked in me through God’s Word, I began to see how much God loved me. God gave me the answer to a lifetime of prayers—He gave me time and love with my dad for the last eight months of his life. These are memories and a gift I would not have if God did not bless me with them.
