“God has gifted Glory ‘Dot’ in caring for the dying both physically and spiritually. She points those in their last days to Christ through His Word. Hebrews 9:27 tells us that it is appointed for men to die once but after this the judgment. She writes in a way that is easy to read with real-life experiences and practical help for those serving the dying. I very much enjoyed working with Glory as we cared for patients and families as hospice nurses.”

Excerpts from Chapter 5 –Leading a Soul to Peace with God

Over the years, God gave me many opportunities to impart spiritual care as an ordained chaplain for my city fire department, county jail, local hospital, various international disaster relief missions, and the Israel Emergency Volunteer Program. There is nothing as rewarding as seeing a soul find peace with God. And the benefits are out of this world!

William Fay’s method uses two principles. The first is from Romans 10:17: “Faith comes from hearing.” The second principle comes from Luke 10:26: “What does it say to you?” Fay presents a simple strategy of soul care that allows God’s Word and the person you speak with to do all the work. To make this possible, prepare your pocket New Testament Bible beforehand. Once this preparation is complete, there is no need to do anything else other than bring it along so you have it when you need it.

It is that simple. After this one-time initial set-up of your Bible, you’ll have a faithful soul-care tool that will work for the rest of your life. Fay’s method is easy and effective in bringing peace to a soul in any situation, including those nearing death.

If the person shows uncertainty about peace with God, then you could ask, “May I share some Scripture with you?” If the answer is yes, open your Bible to the next phase. If the answer is no, do noth‐ ing. To make this process simple, prepare your pocket New Testament by highlighting the Scriptures you plan to use. After each Scripture, note the next verse you plan to go to by writing it at the top of that page and continue with each verse. Once they reply accurately, move directly to the Scripture you have written atop the page of the previous verse. It will take you to the following Bible verse without you having to memorize anything. Do not take time for discussions along the way. Stay focused on your mission to get them to see, speak, and hear the Word of God.

If a person nearing death is already nonverbal, you might consider reading some of these Scriptures and then question if they want to ask God to forgive them. I have had some staff members say that a person had been unresponsive for many days. Yet, when I spoke to them, they opened their eyes, looked at me, and responded by squeezing my hand to indicate that they wanted to pray to ask for God’s salvation through Jesus Christ.

This chapter has given you some helpful ways to provide Scripture based spiritual care. Once you have prepared the Bible, plan to use it; it will take practice until you see how simple the plan really is. I believe you will be amazed at how fun and effective it is. Feel free to use this in combination with other soul care methods as the Lord leads you. Each person you meet will have unique care needs that only the Holy Spirit will know of. Remember to bathe your time in prayer before your encounters
